Erciyes Ski Resort: Season, Elevation and Distance from Cappadocia

Erciyes is one of Turkey's biggest and highest ski areas, near Kayseri and within reach of Cappadocia — season timing, elevation and what to expect.

Where is Erciyes, and why does it matter for a Cappadocia trip?

Erciyes is a dormant volcano in Kayseri province, central Anatolia, rising to about 3,917 meters — one of Turkey's highest peaks. Its ski resort sits on the mountain's slopes roughly 25 km from Kayseri city, and close enough to Cappadocia's hot-air-balloon towns (Göreme, Ürgüp) that some winter visitors combine a balloon-region stay with a day of skiing.

Season and elevation

Erciyes runs one of Turkey's longer ski seasons because of its altitude: lifts and runs start around 2,200 meters and climb toward roughly 3,400 meters. In recent years the season has typically opened in mid-to-late December and, helped by snowmaking at higher elevations, has sometimes run into April or even May. Exact opening and closing dates shift every year with snowfall, so always check the resort's own current-season announcement before booking travel — we're deliberately not printing a fixed date here.

The terrain is large by Turkish standards, with dozens of marked runs and a long total piste length; reported figures vary somewhat between sources and seasons, so we point you to the resort's own current piste map rather than quoting a single number that may be out of date by the time you travel.

Getting there

Most visitors fly into Kayseri Airport (ASR), about a 30–40 minute drive from the slopes, or combine the trip with Cappadocia's Nevşehir (NAV) airport — see our Cappadocia airports guide for the comparison. A private vehicle or organised transfer is the practical way to reach the resort itself, since there's no everyday public transport link from Kayseri city center all the way to the lift base.

Who it suits

Erciyes has runs for beginners through advanced skiers, plus areas for snowboarding and sledding, which makes it workable for families — but as with any mountain resort, check current lift access, equipment rental and age minimums directly with the resort close to your travel date, since these details change between seasons.

Combining Erciyes with Cappadocia

Cappadocia itself is better known for autumn and spring balloon flights than winter sports, but a winter Cappadocia visit with a day trip up to Erciyes gives you both: the valleys and cave hotels of Cappadocia, and a genuine high-mountain ski day without leaving the wider region. For the balloon season and Cappadocia planning in general, see our Cappadocia travel guide.

FAQ

When does the Erciyes ski season start?

Typically mid-to-late December, weather dependent, sometimes running into spring thanks to snowmaking at higher elevations. Check the resort's current-season announcement before booking, since dates shift year to year.

How high is Erciyes?

The mountain itself reaches about 3,917 meters; the ski area's runs span roughly 2,200 to 3,400 meters, among the higher ski elevations in Turkey.

Is Erciyes close to Cappadocia?

Yes — it's in the same central Anatolia region as Cappadocia, reachable as a day trip from the balloon towns, making it a realistic add-on for a winter Cappadocia stay.

Which airport should I fly into for Erciyes?

Kayseri Airport (ASR) is closest to the resort; Cappadocia's own Nevşehir airport (NAV) is a practical alternative if you're also visiting the valleys — see the Cappadocia airports guide for distances.
