Uzungöl Weather at a Glance
Uzungöl is a mountain lake at about 1,090 m in Çaykara district, Trabzon, with a cool, humid climate and rain spread across every season: mild summers with days around 20-23°C and nights of 10-15°C, and cold, snowy winters. The best time to visit is June to September, and July and August are the warmest and least rainy months. The live forecast for today and the next seven days sits in the box at the top of this page and refreshes every two hours, while this guide explains what is typical each month, what to wear and how to prepare for the road.
Uzungöl Weather Month by Month
The figures below are long-term averages in °C, rounded to the nearest degree, not a forecast for any particular year. Day and night temperatures come from two climate datasets that do not match exactly, meteoblue's 30-year simulated series and Copernicus averages for 1991-2020, so we show them as ranges. Rain and snow totals are the averages recorded by the state weather station at the lake for 1969-1997.
| Month | Day (high) | Night (low) | Rain and snow | What it means for your visit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 1 to 3 | -7 to -3 | Mostly snow, about 70 mm | White winter scenery; snowstorms can affect the road |
| February | 2 to 4 | -6 to -3 | Snowiest month, about 70 mm | For snow lovers, with heavy winter clothing |
| March | 6 to 7 | -3 to 0 | Snow, rain and the start of the thaw, about 65 mm | Very quiet, with wet paths |
| April | 11 to 12 | 1 to 3 | Frequent rain, about 90 mm | Cool early spring; night frost still possible |
| May | 16 to 17 | 6 to 8 | Wettest month, about 100 mm | Greenery returns fast; pack a rain jacket |
| June | about 20 | 10 to 12 | Moderate rain, about 95 mm | The season opens and everything is green |
| July | about 22 | 12 to 14 | One of the driest months, about 65 mm | High summer and peak crowds |
| August | 22 to 23 | 13 to 15 | Driest month, about 60 mm | Warmest month; book early |
| September | about 20 | 9 to 11 | Fairly low, about 65 mm | Mild weather and fewer crowds |
| October | 15 to 16 | 5 to 7 | Rain increases, about 95 mm | Autumn colours and possible morning mist |
| November | 9 to 11 | -2 to 2 | Wet, first snow possible, about 95 mm | Cold, damp low season |
| December | 3 to 5 | -6 to -1 | Snow season begins, about 80 mm | Early winter; check the road |
How to read these numbers: climate datasets can differ by a few degrees in a place like this, because the lake sits in a narrow valley ringed by much higher peaks. The far colder figures you may see on some sites (a January average near -8°C) are usually calculated for a wide grid cell that includes the surrounding mountains rather than the lakeshore. For comparison, the lake's own station recorded monthly means of roughly 1°C in December and January, 0.1°C in February (the coldest month) and about 15°C in July and August between 1969 and 1997, an annual mean of about 8°C, and roughly 900-950 mm of precipitation a year, with no dry month.
Uzungöl's Seasons
Summer (June to August): The Best Escape from the Heat
Days run from about 20 to 23°C and nights from 10 to 15°C, so a light jacket is essential after sunset, even in August. Summer here is humid and often misty: the lake station recorded its highest relative humidity in July and August, at around 90%, so low cloud can hide the surrounding mountains from one hour to the next, and a shower is possible on any day. For comparison, Trabzon on the coast averages about 27°C by day and 20-21°C at night in August, according to the Turkish State Meteorological Service, so the difference is most noticeable at night. For the coast in detail, see our Trabzon weather guide.
Autumn (September to November): Quiet, Mist and Colour
September is a gentle extension of summer: about 20°C by day and 9-11°C at night, relatively little rain, and fewer visitors once the school holidays end. In October, days drop to 15-16°C and rainfall rises to about 95 mm; some trees take on autumn colours, and mist can wrap the lake on calm mornings. November is cold and wet, and the first snow can come early: Anadolu Agency reported snow at Uzungöl on 18 October 2024, and on 21 November 2023 CNN Türk reported 5-10 cm of snow around the lake.

Winter (December to February): Snow, Cold and Careful Driving
Average days are 1-5°C and nights fall to between -1 and -7°C, with February the snowiest month. The lake can freeze in some years, though not every year, and the station records show temperatures can drop below zero in six to seven months of the year. Winter is beautiful if you want to see snow around the lake and its lakeside mosque, but it calls for heavy clothing and a flexible plan: days are short, and heavy snowfall can affect the road.
Spring (March to May): Thaw, Rain and Fresh Green
March stays wintry, with nights close to freezing and snow still possible; daytime highs then climb to 11-12°C in April and 16-17°C in May. Spring is the wettest season, with May alone averaging about 100 mm, so the streams run full and the valley turns green quickly. It suits travellers who like quiet and don't mind rain or chilly mornings and evenings.

What to Wear in Uzungöl by Season
- Summer: light clothes for the day, a fleece or light jacket per person for the evening, a light rain jacket or compact umbrella, comfortable shoes with good grip for wet paths, and sunglasses for clear days.
- Spring and autumn: layers (shirt, sweater, jacket), a waterproof jacket and shoes, and a hat for the evening, since the gap between midday and night is close to ten degrees.

Practical Tips: Mist, Rain and the Road
Mist and Rain
Rain is possible in any month, and mist is part of Uzungöl's character, especially in the humid summer. Don't cancel your plans over a forecast shower; instead, keep outdoor activities flexible and have an indoor fallback, such as tea at a café overlooking the lake. On the mountain road, slow down when you drive into fog and switch on your dipped headlights.
The Road from Trabzon
Uzungöl is about 99 km from Trabzon city, a drive of 1.5 to 2 hours: the road runs east along the coast to Of, then climbs south up the valley through Çaykara. Because the weather changes with altitude, you can leave a sunny coast and arrive at a lake wrapped in mist, so rely on Uzungöl's own forecast rather than Trabzon's. If you would rather not drive the mountain bends, Voyago offers a private transfer from Trabzon Airport (TZX) straight to your hotel, and if you prefer the freedom of your own wheels there is car rental at Trabzon Airport. For more on the lake and what to do there, see our complete Uzungöl guide.
Best Time for the Lake Reflection Photo
A perfect reflection of the mosque and mountains needs still air and a clear sky, and your best chance is usually early morning, soon after sunrise, before the breeze picks up and clouds gather as the day warms. Check the forecast the evening before; if the morning is misty, wait a little, because the mist often thins gradually as the sun climbs and leaves a magical scene.
Winter Driving
If you plan to drive yourself in winter, note that Turkey requires vehicles carrying passengers or goods on intercity roads to use winter tyres from 15 November to 15 April, and the Ministry of Transport recommends them for private cars too, because they grip better once temperatures fall below 7°C; provincial governors can extend the period by a month either side. Ask your rental company for winter tyres and snow chains, since chains alone are no substitute for winter tyres. Drive in daylight, avoid returning after sunset when the road can ice over, and before setting off check the road status bulletin of the General Directorate of Highways (KGM) or call its free 159 line.
