Eyup Sultan, Pierre Loti Hill and the Cable Car: A Golden Horn Afternoon

How the Eyup-Pierre Loti cable car actually works, what it costs, and how to pair the mosque, the hilltop view and the historic cemetery into one half-day.

Part of our guideTurkey Tourism 2026: Overview for Arab Travelers

What this trip actually is

Eyup Sultan Mosque sits on the Golden Horn, outside the old-city tourist core most Gulf visitors cover in a Hagia Sophia–Topkapi day. The appeal here is different: a working pilgrimage mosque, a hillside Ottoman cemetery, and — at the top — the view from Pierre Loti Hill that gave the 19th-century French writer his name for the spot. A two-minute cable car connects the two.

This pairs naturally as a half-day on its own, or as a quieter add-on if your main historic-sites day already felt rushed.

Getting there

The most direct route is the T5 tram line, which runs from Eminonu along the Golden Horn coast; get off at the "Eyup Sultan-Teleferik" stop. A ferry from Eminonu or Karakoy to Eyup is a scenic alternative with Golden Horn views along the way. From Taksim or Sultanahmet, a taxi takes roughly 30 minutes depending on traffic.

The cable car (TF2 Teleferik)

Once at Eyup, the TF2 cable car covers the 384-metre climb to Pierre Loti Hill in about two minutes — the alternative is walking up through the cemetery, which takes longer but is atmospheric in its own right. Metro Istanbul's own TF2 line page confirms the Eyup–Pierre Loti route and that the Eyup station connects with the T5 tram and ferry landing.

Payment is by Istanbulkart or a contactless bank card at the turnstile — there is no cash option, so arrive with a loaded card. As of a fare update from 20 July 2026, the standard full first-boarding fare was 46.20 TL, with a lower student rate; fares are adjusted periodically, so treat this as a reference rather than today's exact price (checked 20 October 2026).

A route many locals use: walk up through the cemetery first, while the light and the path are at their best, then take the cable car down once you're done — it saves the climb for the direction where you need it least.

What's at the top and the bottom

  • Eyup Sultan Mosque (bottom, by the Golden Horn): one of Istanbul's most visited religious sites, built around the tomb of a companion of the Prophet; expect a genuinely active place of prayer and pilgrimage, not primarily a tourist attraction, so dress and behave accordingly.
  • The Ottoman cemetery (the hillside between the mosque and the hilltop): centuries of tombstones climbing the slope, walkable on the way up or down.
  • Pierre Loti Hill (top): a cafe terrace with a wide Golden Horn view, named after the hill's most famous historical resident rather than a ride or attraction in itself.

Practical notes

  • Crowds: queues build on weekends and in the hour before sunset, when everyone wants the same golden-hour photo. A weekday morning visit is calmer at both the mosque and the cable car.
  • Dress: as with any active mosque, modest dress is expected and headscarves are provided for women if needed at the entrance.
  • Combine with: this sits naturally alongside a Golden Horn-focused day; for the old city's core sights (Hagia Sophia, Topkapi, the Blue Mosque), see the Istanbul historic sites guide.

FAQ

Is the cable car worth it, or should I just walk?

Walking through the cemetery is free and scenic in one direction; the cable car is faster and easier for children, elders, or anyone short on time — many visitors do one leg each way.

Can I pay for the cable car with cash?

No — payment is Istanbulkart or a contactless bank card only. If you don't have one yet, Istanbulkart is sold at kiosks and machines throughout the public transport network.

How much time should I set aside?

A relaxed half-day covers the mosque, the cemetery walk and the hilltop view comfortably; add extra time if you plan to sit for tea at the Pierre Loti cafe at the top.
