Istanbul in March: The Short Answer

March is the month Istanbul turns from winter towards spring, but slowly. Days average about 12°C (closer to 10°C in the first week and 14-15°C by the end), nights 5-6°C, and rain falls on roughly 11 to 13 days. Cold snaps are still common in the first half, and a late snowfall is possible though rare. The sea stays cold, about 9°C. Days lengthen fast: sunset moves from about 6:54 pm on 1 March to 7:27 pm on the 31st, and from the spring equinox around 20 March, days are longer than nights.

In 2027, March also includes the last days of Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr, expected around 9 or 10 March (depending on the moon sighting). The live seven-day forecast at the top of this page comes from the Norwegian Meteorological Institute (MET Norway) and refreshes every two hours; use it for your travel days and the averages below for planning.

March in Numbers

These are long-term averages for the city, rounded and shown as ranges because Istanbul's weather stations differ: the Black Sea end of the Bosphorus is cooler and windier than the Marmara shore.

SnowRare, mostly in the first half of the month

Turkey stays on UTC+3 all year, so there is no clock change in late March, unlike in Europe. Mornings get light earlier every week, and by the end of the month sunrise is before 7 am.

How the Month Changes

The first half of March often still feels like winter: grey days, cold northerly winds (poyraz) and the occasional sleet or snow shower, especially on the hills and in the northern districts. The second half brings more sunny spells, with some afternoons reaching 15-18°C when the wind turns south-westerly (lodos). Lodos days are mild but gusty and can still delay ferries for a few hours.

The first signs of spring appear in parks and on the Bosphorus shore: almond and plum blossom, early magnolias and Judas trees starting to bud. The famous tulip displays at Emirgan Park and across the city belong to April, when the Istanbul Tulip Festival is usually held, so do not plan a March trip around tulips.

February is colder and has the start of Ramadan in 2027; see the February weather guide. For the full year, see Istanbul weather month by month.

The End of Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr 2027

Ramadan 2027 is expected to end around 9 March, with Eid al-Fitr (called Ramazan Bayramı in Turkey) expected on about 9 or 10 March. The exact date depends on the moon sighting and the announcement by Turkey's Presidency of Religious Affairs (Diyanet), which may differ by a day from Gulf countries.

  • Iftar in early March falls at sunset, at roughly 7 pm. Restaurants fill up an hour beforehand; book ahead for the last weekend of Ramadan.
  • Ramadan evenings around the Blue Mosque in Sultanahmet and at Eyüp Sultan Mosque are lively, with stalls and food, and the illuminated mahya messages between minarets stay up until Eid.
  • Eid is a public holiday, usually three days plus a half-day on the eve. Banks and government offices close; most shops, malls, restaurants and museums stay open, but check opening hours for palaces and museums on the first day.
  • Eid is a peak travel period. Many Turkish families travel, and visitors from the Gulf arrive for the holiday. Flights, hotels, intercity buses and roads out of Istanbul are busier, and prices rise. Book transfers and cars early.
  • Eid traditions: families visit relatives, children receive sweets and small gifts of money, and baklava shops have long queues on the eve.

What to Wear in March

March weather changes from day to day, so pack for both winter and spring.

  • A warm, water-resistant jacket: a lighter coat is fine in the second half, but keep a warm layer for the evenings.
  • Layers: long-sleeved tops and a sweater or fleece.
  • Waterproof walking shoes for wet days and stone streets.
  • Scarf and a light hat for windy ferries and evenings.
  • Modest clothing for mosques: women need a headscarf inside; shoulders and knees covered for everyone.

Things to Do in March

Dry days: the longer evenings make March good for walking. Try Sultanahmet in the morning, a public ferry up the Bosphorus at midday, and an evening in Balat and Fener or along the Kadıköy waterfront. Gülhane Park and Emirgan Park are pleasant on sunny days, even before the tulips.

Princes' Islands: on calm, sunny days the islands are quiet before the season starts; check the forecast, because lodos winds can disrupt crossings.

Rainy days: Istanbul Archaeology Museums, the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts, the Basilica Cistern, the Grand Bazaar (closed on Sundays) and the Spice Bazaar, a hammam, and the big malls. See the Turkey museums guide and the Istanbul halal food guide.

Day Trips: The Last Snow and the First Spring Days

The ski season at Uludağ usually continues into March, but snow quality depends on the year and softens quickly as days warm; check conditions before you go in our Uludağ ski guide. Sapanca and Maşukiye, about two hours east, are green and quiet in March, a good choice for a family day out; see the Sapanca and Maşukiye guide. Bursa and the thermal springs of Yalova also suit the cool weather; see the Yalova thermal guide.

Compare cars on our Istanbul car rental page. Turkey's winter-tyre rules for commercial and passenger-carrying vehicles run until 15 April, and rental cars driven to the mountains in March should still have winter tyres; ask for chains if you are heading to Uludağ. For airport runs and Eid travel days, a pre-booked transfer saves time when traffic is heavy.

Common March Mistakes

  • Packing for spring only. The first half of March can be as cold as February.
  • Expecting tulips. The main tulip season is April.
  • Booking Eid travel late. Flights, cars and transfers around Eid sell out and cost more.
  • Assuming the clocks change. Turkey does not change its clocks; check your connecting flight times if you fly via Europe, where clocks go forward at the end of March.
